TOKYO – North Korea-linked hackers have targeted engineers in more than 100 countries and regions, including Japan, stealing cryptocurrency assets worth at least 1.7 billion yen ($11 million) and illegally transferring them to North Korea, Japan’s National Police Agency and other sources said Friday.
Japanese authorities also said they have confirmed a method that allows the hackers to remotely operate devices belonging to supporters in Japan to obtain foreign currency.
The announcement was intended to identify and condemn nations or organizations suspected of involvement in the cyberattacks, with the aim of warning and deterring them. It was made jointly with authorities in the United States, Australia and Germany.
