For years, crypto investors could complain that South African tax rules were unclear. That excuse is becoming harder to sustain.

A draft crypto tax guide published by the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in July spells out much of what investors need to know: crypto is an asset rather than currency, swapping one crypto asset for another constitutes a disposal, using crypto to buy something is also a disposal, and staking rewards are taxable when received.
