The original crypto hits a new record over $111,000 on ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’
On a day that saw news of the penny’s demise, bitcoin, the original cryptocurrency, reached a new high as enthusiasts celebrated the anniversary of the first ever real world purchase using the virtual tender: pizza.
Thursday marked the 15th anniversary of “Bitcoin Pizza Day” when software developer Laszlo Hanyecz paid for two Papa John’s pizzas delivered to his Florida home with 10,000 bitcoin.
The franchise pies, worth about $42 at the time, traded for a cache of the fledgling currency worth a whopping $1.1 billion today.
Bitcoin was trading at about $111,000 on Thursday morning — a new record. That price gives it a market cap of more than $2 trillion, or about the same as Amazon.
