South African High Court judge calls for legal reform in crypto regulation

2nd June 2025 – (Johannesburg) A High Court judge in South Africa, Mandlenkosi Motha, has openly criticized the country’s central bank for relying on antiquated crypto regulations to oversee the sector. Judge Motha highlighted that the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) was employing outdated exchange control guidelines, originally designed during apartheid, to manage digital assets like Bitcoin. These comments arose during a legal dispute between Standard Bank and a company that failed to repay a debt amounting to R41 million.
