A wave of phone scams is sweeping across France as criminals weaponize stolen tax records to impersonate support staff from major cryptocurrency platforms, including Binance and Meria, and pressure holders into moving funds to wallets under their control.
Owen Simonin, founder of Meria and known online as Hasheur, tied the surge in fraudulent calls to a cascade of data breaches hitting both private companies and public agencies. In a Sept. 20 post on X, he said attackers are cross-referencing leaked information to identify crypto owners and determine which exchanges they use.
