A fake letter purporting to be from the maker of a cryptocurrency wallet led a Weston resident to be scammed out of more than $234,000 in September, according to federal court papers.

“They create a false sense of urgency, pressuring users to enter their Secret Recovery Phrase into a website or scan a QR code that directs them to a phishing website,” a notice on the company’s website said. A Reddit user posted what appears to be one example of the fake letters in November.
