ESMA urges stronger crypto regulations with mandatory cybersecurity audits

17th October 2024 – (Paris) The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has urged EU lawmakers to enhance regulations in the cryptocurrency sector by requiring external cybersecurity audits for companies. This call comes amid a concerning rise in cyberattacks that jeopardise consumer protections, as reported by the Financial Times on 16th October.

As part of proposed amendments to the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), which is set to be fully implemented by December 2024, ESMA is advocating for stricter measures to safeguard crypto platforms. Central to this proposal is the requirement for companies to undergo third-party audits to identify and mitigate potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
