Four years ago, US President Donald Trump warned that the value of cryptocurrency was “based on thin air”. Fast forward to 2025, and the world’s most powerful man has since pivoted to crypto for personal gain, adding US$620 million (A$948 million) to his net worth.
Trump has always traded on his name, flogging everything from Bibles, watches, steaks and even college degrees. But these ventures pale in comparison to the scale of crypto, a technology that costs next to nothing to launch and whose value is limited only by the attention it can generate.
Just before his second inauguration, Trump launched a memecoin, “$TRUMP”, with the first stage of its presale selling out immediately, raising US$300 million. Beyond Cam…
