In March 2022, Shell sold more than 20 LNG cargoes as “carbon-neutral,” backed by nearly five million credits from rice farms in China’s Anhui province. The credits flowed through Verra—the leading voluntary carbon registry—based on claims that irrigation upgrades had slashed methane emissions.
