Canberra heads off quantum threat with new crypto mandate

Federal agencies have been directed to draw up plans to retire the encryption standards underpinning their systems, as quantum computers powerful enough to break public key cryptography edge closer to reality.

Australia’s cybersecurity agency has been urging agencies to begin the shift to post-quantum cryptographic algorithms (PQC) for at least the last 18 months, first setting a 2030 deadline in the Information Security Manual in late 2024.
