Berkeley County detective sends warning on crypto machines

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCSC) – A Berkeley County Sheriff’s detective is raising concerns as ATM crypto machines have begun popping up in places like vape shops and gas stations across the Lowcountry.

The kiosk ATMs allow people to put cash into the machine and receive some kind of cryptocurrency. But Detective Jeremy Maurer says they’re being used for fraud 99.5% of the time.

Maurer has been investigating white collar crime for years and says this new scam is becoming more prevalent.

He says the scam begins with people pretending to be everything from law enforcement to U.S. government agents. Some have even pretended to represent other businesses, including members of the media. But Maurer says they’re out to get your money.
