Stock markets globally have faced a tumultuous period so far in 2025, largely buffeted by the US President Donald Trump’s announcements on tariffs, which have threatened a slowdown in global economic growth. Markets have since recovered amid signs of easing trade turmoil, but the outlook remains subdued as geopolitical risks have risen.
Among the world’s most widely followed stock indices, the US benchmark S&P 500 index is up 2.7% so far this year, the tech-heavy Nasdaq has lifted 1.6% while Japan’s Nikkei is down 2%.
Australia’s own benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index is also up 2.5% in the last six months, despite the risks of geopolitical uncertainty affecting global trade.
