The decision to abandon high-profile enforcement actions against major cryptocurrency firms last year was a calculated move to protect the agency’s institutional credibility ahead of a sweeping regulatory overhaul, SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda said Wednesday.

Speaking at Georgetown University’s Financial Markets Quality Conference, hosted by the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy, Uyeda offered the most detailed public explanation yet for why the Securities and Exchange Commission walked away from cases against Kraken, Ripple Labs, Coinbase and other digital asset companies during his tenure as acting chair from January to April 2025.
