The South African Reserve Bank has said that crypto assets must be subject to the same regulatory standards as traditional financial institutions to ensure a level playing field.
Speaking at the bank’s 105th annual general meeting, governor Lesetja Kganyago said while cryptocurrencies and stablecoins have the potential to make cross-border payments faster and cheaper, they must not be allowed to create loopholes for capital controls or financial crime.
“We have taken a big step forward with our new 3% inflation target. Our financial system continues to demonstrate resilience in an uncertain and difficult world. We are driving payment innovation to close the gap with the leading countries.”#SARBAGM2026
