Scammers duping Qld’ers with crypto and puppies

Puppies, cryptocurrency and the Brisbane Broncos might have little in common, but they’re all being used by scammers to separate Queenslanders from their money.

The warning comes as Scamwatch recorded 19,453 scam reports and $38.5 million in reported losses across Queensland in 2026, with investment scams, buying and selling scams, business email compromise scams, impersonation scams and romance scams among the state’s biggest threats.

Westpac Executive Manager of Fraud and Financial Intelligence Sophie Gee said scammers were increasingly tailoring schemes to Queenslanders’ lifestyles, hobbies and ambitions.
