Crypto ‘solidarity levy’ could fund climate action and clean up blockchain, says report
Experts warn cryptocurrencies’ rapid growth could be contributing to climate change and call for taxes to make the sector part of the solution
Taxing cryptocurrency transactions based on their carbon footprint could reward cleaner crypto assets and help raise funds for climate action, says a report published by a group of international tax and climate experts.
The paper, published on Monday, was commissioned by the Global Solidarity Levies Task Force, a coalition formed after COP28 in 2023 with the aim of researching “feasible, scaleable and sensible” options for climate levies that could help countries meet international climate commitments.
